Wonderful festival atmosphere at the VELOBerlin
With over 300 brands represented, thousands of test rides, bike tours and events planned to kick off the bicycle season, the VELOBerlin 2017, which took place under bright sunny skies, was an early summer celebration for bicycle fans everywhere.
VELOBerlin patron and newly appointed senator Regine Günther predicted sunny times ahead for Berlin cyclists - and perfect bike weather and the wonderful spring mood at the exhibition area surrounding the Berlin Funkturm (radio tower) bore her out. “Although the weather meant that fewer visitors than last year made their way to the exhibition halls, the about 13,000 guests proved to be real bike fans,” said EUROBIKE project leader and organizer Dirk Heidrich from Messe Friedrichshafen, commenting on the quality of the visitors. Equipped with comprehensive information in advance, visitors tried out their favorite bikes at the large outdoor area and got some final questions answered before making a purchase decision.
All excursions booked solid
Several hundred interested visitors had the opportunity to put the newest bikes to the acid test in VELOTouren - guided tours through that nearby Grunewald urban forest. Whether it was the e-bike tours to the Teufelsberg hill, excursions focusing on off-road mountain bike techniques, the VELOTHON training round across the Grunewald and Havel river, or the SIGMA Illumi night ride - all of the tours were completely booked solid, thrilling participants as well as the guides providing the tours.
Interesting technical events and exciting discussion panels
Technical events on safe bicycle parking as well as discussion rounds about the reallocation of space in the Berlin transportation system drew trade visitors and bike experts as well as urban planners and interested guests to the lounge and event center at the base of the radio tower. On the stage, knowledgeable speakers provided information about digitalization, cargo bikes, e-bikes and VELOWomen - a subject that was met with enthusiasm in many workshops, tours and expert interviews.
Product innovations in smart cycling, e-mountain bikes and sporty city bikes were of great interest to the visiting public, as was the VELOBerlin Cargobike Race, in which manufacturers, producers and fearless visitors faced off against each other on cargo bikes.
Date for 2018 already set
“Visitors who are enthusiastic about bikes, successful discussions, thousands of test drives and a growing media and political presence that stretches far beyond the confines of the capital have confirmed the status of the VELOBerlin as the bike festival for Berlin,” said organizer Ulrike Saade, visibly pleased.
Next year, the VELOBerlin will take place for the eight time on April 14 and 15, again at the Berlin Funkturm.
Jens-Holger Kirchner, State Secretary for Transportation: "The VELO is essential for Berlin! When we talk about the bicycle in Berlin, we need this place once a year, a place where we can all meet, get better informed, and try out new trends. Keep up the good work!"
Konrad Weyhmann, Marketing and Public Relations, Paul Lange/Shimano Deutschland: "For us, the VELOBerlin was very positive; we had a lot of interested and well informed visitors who specifically asked about and tried out our DI2 electronic shifting system and the E8000 MTB drive."
Kay Tkatzik, Event and Store Team, Riese&Müller: "The VELO weekend is very worthwhile for us! There is a wonderful festival mood, everything is well organized and even though the weather was better than we would have wanted, we did good business."
Rait Udumäe, Founder of Ampler Bikes (Estonia): "We are very happy to have exhibited at the VELOBerlin for the second time. We were able impress many visitors with our bikes, both in the exhibition hall and at the Testival in the courtyard. Plus, the event is very well organized."
Stephan Zehren, Head of Design & Events, Schindelhauer Bikes: "A well-frequented event with very interested visitors! I especially like the huge test area."
Steffi Wulf, Cofounder of Fahrradjäger: "For us as a startup, the VELOBerlin 2017 was a complete success. We had countless numbers of great discussions and got a lot of pre-orders for “insect,” the product that we will be bringing onto the market this summer."
Andreas Hombach, Head of Distribution and Sales, WSM Fahrradparksysteme: "The combination of bike show and technical event was ideal for us as a manufacturer of parking systems – that way, we can meet both decision-makers and consumers!"
Joachim Leffler, Managing Director, fahrer Berlin: "Once again, the quality of the visitors was outstanding, just like we are accustomed to at this event!"
